Big news for little kids

New research has helped design a reading program for Aboriginal families developed by Raising Literacy Australia thanks to funding from the Good Home partners Villawood Properties and Weeks Homes, The Advertiser Foundation and the Ch7 Children's Research Foundation.

When the hammer falls at the Good Home auction on November 1, the buyer will not only walk away with a fully furnished Japandi style 3-bedroom home at 24 Bluegum Way in the stunning new community at Oakden Rise - they'll also be walking away with the great feeling you get when you are doing something for others. Weeks Homes, Villawood Properties and their suppliers are donating 100% of the proceeds to the Kids' Appeal supporting the Childhood Cancer Association, Kickstart for Kids, the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation, Backpacks4SAKids, Sammy D Foundation and the Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation's Aboriginal literacy project with Raising Literacy Australia. Former White Ribbon breakfast group, Wake Up to Change, is jumping in to help Catherine House in responding to the growing number of women experiencing homelessness - often when escaping domestic violence. Gillian Lewis, Cintra Amos and Grant Pearson from Wake Up to Change proudly handed over a cheque for $5k to Catherine House's Jaylee Cooper.

The Good Home at Oakden Rise is nearly finished and Jeremiah and Callum were happy to pitch in with Day's Landscaping to make the outside as beautiful as the inside. Jeremiah, 14, has been part of the Kickstart for Kids' school breakfast program and holiday program since primary school and says it has made life better, while Callum, 17, says his life is on the right track thanks to the Sammy D Foundation's anti violence programs. Day's Landscaping is among the host of wonderful suppliers who have donated time and materials to the Good Home House and Land Auction by Weeks Homes and Villawood, who are donating 100% of the sale proceeds to help South Australia's most vulnerable kids and families through some of the toughest times of their lives. Charities supported include The Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation Family Support Program, Sammy D Foundation, Childhood Cancer Association, Kickstart for Kids and the Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation. Mitsubishi Motors Australia Chief Executive Officer Shaun Westcott and Chief Operating Officer Rob Nazzari rolled up their sleeves with The Advertiser Foundation's chair Melvin Mansell to provide a delicious lunch cooked by popular chef Simon Bryant to clients at the Hutt St Centre. Mitsubishi Motors Australia is again a major donor to The Blanket Appeal, raising money and awareness about the increasing challenges for people in vulnerable situations, struggling to find a roof over their heads. The reason, Shaun explains is that: “Mitsubishi has been part of the Adelaide community for 45 years. We are incredibly fortunate to be here and giving back to the community is the right thing to do. The Hutt St Centre is doing vital work for our community members in need and that’s why we are always ready to support it”. And as Rob says: “Life can change quickly – anyone can find themselves in a tough spot. It’s been a cold winter, and if we can help make someone’s day a little bit easier with a warm meal, that’s a cause we’re very happy to get behind.” Other generous major donors to the Blanket Appeal which is supporting the Hutt St Centre and Catherine House include the Nunn Dimos Foundation, Wake Up To Change and the ACMA Foundation.

12-year old Jade got to step into some pretty big boots when she got to try out being a tradie with plumber Jason Anderson from EPS Plumbing Services at the Good Home at Oakden Rise being donated by Weeks Homes and Villawood Properties for The Advertiser Foundation Kids' Appeal. The gorgeous Japandi style home is coming together ahead of the auction on 1 November. The proceeds of the sale will help disadvantaged and sick kids and their families in SA - you can help by donating to the appeal.

A new generation of farmers is learning how to shear their own sheep in a bid to cut farm costs and supplement farm income as the drought bites. The Advertiser Foundation was happy to support shearing training for young farmers in Jamestown and Peterborough as part of the For Pete's Sake drought relief campaign.

The third annual SkyCity KickStart for Kids against Period Poverty fundraiser raised money, awareness and period products for South Australian girls in need. Kickstart for Kids - a charity partner of the Good Home auction for The Advertiser Foundation Kids' Appeal - delivers more than 1,200 packs of sanitary items monthly to over 200 schools across South Australia, with demand continuing to rise. Ambassadors Bec Morse, Jenna in the Pink and Matilda Scholz and MPs Connie Bonaros MLC and the Hon. Blair Boyer were among the speakers lifting the lid on the challenges facing many South Aussie kids.

Kids' sport in the drought-affected regions of Pinnaroo and Lameroo is bringing the community together at a time when people need it most - and, as part of The Advertiser's 'For Pete's Sake' campaign, The Advertiser Foundation is glad to be providing some free meals for kids at home games through the Southern Mallee Suns Football and Netball club. Compliments to the chef are in order judging from these big grins.

Kickstart for Kids and SkyCity invite you to help end period poverty - and spend a fabulous afternoon on Friday 30 May at Sol Rooftop Bar. All the proceeds of the SkyCity event will go towards providing sanitary products to SA schools. Kickstart for Kids provides over 1000 packs of pads and 200 packs of tampons to 200 schools every month - a demand it is struggling to meet. Bec Morse will host the event which includes a fashion parade by Couture Love Madness and Crestwell Brands by Melaine Flintoff, as well as inspiring speakers, live music and a silent auction, with a 3-hour drinks package and canapes.
